Preliminary Task Evaluation

For my preliminary task I worked with Francesca (Toni) , Natalie (Sonia)  and Charlie (Dan). We were provided with a basic script which we could incorporate our own story line to. We started by planning out what we wanted to do and how many scenes that we thought would be necessary. The shots that we had to include in our recording were the pan shot, continuity recording and shot reverse shot. The storyline that we decided on was that Sonia and her two friends Toni and Sam go to a party one night where they have an argument. Sonia then leaves the party to go and meet her boyfriend who is infact one of her teachers at her school. On the way to meeting him, she gets attacked.

We started recording early on in the process. We first started filming in the common room, this included Natalie recording my character of Sam and Francesca's character of Toni having a conversation about their friend who "didn't come back last night. Which then leads to a phone call to Sonia, their friend. We included a shot reverse shot within this scene and a close up on the phone. This was also continuity filming. This is where their friend Sonia said that she was in the hospital and that she needed them to come quick.

The second shot then went to the hospital room, or this shot we used the medical room in school. For this, we started by using an establishing shot of a pan to show you the setting of the medical room/hospital room. The shot then went to a mid-shot of Sonia in the hospital bed on the phone to Toni telling her to come quick. The phone then cuts out because of loss of signal and we did a close up of the phone. The shot then went back to the common room and the conversation between Toni and Sam, where Toni tells Same that she's "not going to believe this".

It then went to a over the shoulder shot of Sonia and her older boyfriend Dan having an in-depth conversation of the nights events. After the conversation had ended we then did a close up of the couple holding hands.

The way we recorded the whole process was we did everything that we needed to record in each room then we would edit it later on. So we started in the common room then moved to the medical room. We later on used the mac and IMovie software to cut and chop the scenes that we recorded and patched them together to they all matched up.

Ways we could improve the recording is by firstly the camera work. We had good camera angles but we needed to possibly use a tripod because we had a problem with shakey camera work, especially in the hospital scene. The second thing we could improve was the lighting, I think that we could have made the medical room brighter. Another thing could be the sound, I think we could have edited hospital sounds. Another problem was the continuity of the phone call, we did two close up of the phones and they were about 15 minutes apart considering the phone call didn't last that long. We originally planned to have a flashback of the actually attack and argument but we ran out of time. These issues will have to be considered later on in my projects and I will organise things more.
